Next time when you come across the word ‘Datuk Shahrukh Khan’, don’t be surprised for our King Khan has been conferred the title of ‘Datuk’ by the Governor of Malaysia’s southern Malacca State. For the uninitiated, ‘Datuk’ is equivalent of the prestigious British knighthood. With this SRK becomes the first in Bollywood fraternity to be conferred a Malaysian title.
SRK appeared all dressed up in a chic traditional black and gold Malay outfit (Baju Melayu and samping), and headgear to receive the title from the Governor of Malaysia’s southern Malacca State, Mohamad Khalil Yaacob. After the grand ceremony, SRK announced that he would star in a new movie My Name is Khan, that would help spread the message that Islam does not support terrorism, but is something that would make clear that Islam does not in any which way tell you to be violent. SRK, on his part also furthered that “I think the whole concept of jihad, the whole concept of warring needs to be explained as Allah meant it to be in the Koran… it is an attempt to try and do that in an entertaining way.”
Though many locals opposed that SRK should get this award leaving out the many deserving ones, Malacca authorities chose SRK to be given the title was because six of his movies were shot in the historical State, thus, giving a boost to tourism.
