Old Is Gold But Young Is Popular

old-is-gold1.jpg

The reigning Baadshah of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan celebrated his 43rd birthday, Aishwarya Rai proudly turned 35 and Tabu turned 38. Bollywood’s creme de la creme has really come of age. Top Bollywood heroes are all above 40 and top actresses are in their early and mid-thirties.

Aamir Khan too is 43, Salman Khan is 42, Akshay Kumar 41, Sanjay Dutt 49, Anil Kapoor 48. Salman Khan still annoyingly lurks around roles of a young man waiting to fall in love. Aamir Khan, carries his age with class and focuses on a lot more than chocolate romance that has been SRK’s department for a long long time. But with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi Shahrukh seems to show that as an actor he is quite comfortable with his age, although Om Shanti Om was quite a shocker in this matter.

All top Bollywood actresses are in their thirties. Mallika 36, Aishwarya 35, Preity 33, Amisha 32, Sushmita 32, Bipasha 31, Rani 30 and Vidya 30. Kareena Kapoor 28, Priyanka Chopra 26 and Amrita Rao 27 are in their late twenties and have still some time to go before their careers start sagging but for all the beauties in their 30s, they start worrying about their future, marriage and their biological clock that keeps ticking faster at that age.

old is gold-2.jpg

As far as the actresses are concerned, these days young guns like Prachi Desai 20, Kangana Ranaut 21, Deepika Padukone 22, Minnisha Lamba 23, Asin 23, Sonam Kapoor 23, and Katrina Kaif 24 are topping the popularity charts along with guys like Ranbir Kapoor 26 and Imran Khan 25 who are just in their mid-20s.

Some people like Mallika Sherawat and Bipasha Basu have gone at length to hide their original age. Bipasha who went around the world saying she is 29 only is actually 32 years old. Her school junior from Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, Kolkata who is herself actually 29 says,“Bipasha was my senior in school and at least three years older than me. I don’t know how she suddenly cut down so many years”.

Mallika Sherawat, although has every excuse to make her look like a 27 year old but she is actually not. She has apparently had a long struggling phase of modelling, air hosting and even an alleged failed marriage. That makes her just not less than 36 years old. Yet she recently celebrated her 28th birthday.

I wish Bollywood learns to age gracefully… even if they dont there is always Godrej, Loreal and Garnier for their rescue… you know what I mean.

Can Bollywood’s Bikini Babes Make a Film Hit?

bollywoods bikini babes.jpg

Its been a popular trend inspired from Hollywood flicks like Bond series to have a super sexy actress emerging out of the sea in a bikini. Most filmmakers promote this as the USP of the film.
Priyanka Chopra walking in a golden swimsuit in Dostana’s first promos, Minissha Lamba sizzling down in her pearly white bikini swimming carelessly in the Ocean or Kareena Kapoor flaunting her zero size figure in a electric green bikini in Tashan… Bollywood sure knows how to flaunt their leading ladies to grab eye-balls.
But how far does this tactic help in pulling crowds to the cinema hall? Can a bikini clad Kareena Kapoor, Mallika Sherawat or Bipasha Basu evoke so much interest and curiosity. One movie buff, Piyush Arora says, “Bikini shots are fairly common these days… besides all of them look just the same, so I wouldn’t go for the movie because it offers a Bikini scene. It hardly matters.”While another cine-goer Bharthi says, “Whatever people might say but skin show does attract people… especially men. It offers them sheer spectacle that film makers make out of women’s bodies… and if it draws crowds to the theatres, they find nothing wrong with it. Its worth a try for them.”
What do you think? Do Bikini scenes evoke your curiosity? Would you be interested to watch a film if the promos show the leading lady in a Bikini?

Financial Crisis Pinches Bollywood Too

himesh-reshammiya.jpg

The fumes of the global economic meltdown have started effecting Bollywood big time as major production houses start cost-cutting.Apparently, T-Series CEO Bhushan Kumar has asked Director Pooja Bhatt to reduce the budget of her Himesh Reshammiya starring Kajra Re. The production house is also reconsidering its projects that are starring expensive stars like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar.Bollywood trade analyst Komal Nahata confirms, “The slowdown has been felt in the industry rather slowly, but it has now caught up with it…However, it is difficult to say whether this has happened as a result of the global impact or due to the box-office disasters of recent big-budget movies, like Drona, Kidnap and Karzzz. But a sense of insecurity now pervades all production concerns, more so in Bollywood’s corporates houses.”

Director of a production house called Percept Picture also added saying, “Recently, two Bollywood corporate houses incurred losses to the tune of Rs 160 crore and Rs 60 crore, respectively. Naturally both have now put on hold their planned acquisitions. This was bound to happen. But it has happened sooner than we expected.”Kishore Lulla of Eros International explains, “Look, with the liquidity crunch in the market, people now have less disposable income and so they will now spend less on luxury and entertainment - which means the movie-going clientele will decrease and so will the box-office collections.“This will first affect the exhibition and distribution sector and consequently the production sector as it will have less money coming in from the two main sources - film exhibition and distribution. With less money on hand, producers will be forced to cut cost before the system gets corrected.”

Sad!!!

Kareena a Fan of Saif’s Ex-Wife

saif-kareena3.jpg

Kareena Kapoor may still have 3-4 years more to go before she walks down the aisle and says Kubool Hai to Saif, but she is trying her level best to fit in to Saif’s family well in advance. She has bonded well with the Pataudis, Saif’s kids Sarah and Ibrahim also like her and guess who she is ready to break the ice with - Saif’s ex-wife Amrita Singh. In an interview she revealed, “I respect the fact that Saif was married before and has two lovely children. I have been a fan of Amrita Singh. I haven’t met her ever but I know her through her films. For me, she’ll always have a place of importance in his life because she is Saif Ali Khan’s first wife and the mother of his children. And, I’ve told Saif this. I would want her to have that kind of respect always. This is what my parents have taught me. At the end of the day, it was just a marriage that didn’t work out. I have always encouraged Saif to be friends with her because I think that would be great. I guess they will just need time but that’s something that they would need to deal with. I will always respect her. As far as any other relationship of Saif is concerned, I don’t think they really mattered.”

Anil Kapoor's Profile

Anil started his career with Woh Saat Din with Padmini Kolhapure and Naseerudhin Shah in lead role. His father Surinder Kapoor was secretary to Shammi Kapor and also produced and distributed films. But he was not successful and lost lots of money. Anil was frustrated with the struggle and desperately wanted to become an actor, he had a real passion for it.

Anil Kapoor

He used to live in a chawl in Chembur. His father Surinder Kapoor was a producer but was always hard pressed for luck, as his film didn’t exactly do good business at the box-office. So much so that it became difficult for his two sons Boney and Anil to pursue studies. But that did not deter the ‘acid’ hero’s spirit! Exposed to cinema since an early age, Anil knew he wanted to be an actor.

His first big break came in the form of Saawan Kumar’s Laila that had Poonam Dhillon as his co-star. The film flopped at the box-office, but Anil did not! He bagged Anil Ganguly’s Saaheb with Amrita Singh and the film came as a windfall. Essaying the role of a good-for-nothing youth he stormed into the hearts of the masses as the one who donates his kidney. The film hit bull’s eye at the box-office and there was no looking back. Came Subhash Ghai’s Uttar Dakshin and A. Suryanarayan’s Hifazat that helped him prove his credentials as an actor. Both the films had Madhuri Dixit as his co-star, another talented heroine who was waiting for the right break.

And it did not take a long time for the right breaks to arrive. After Subhash Ghai’s Karma came N. Chandra’s Tezaab that had him in the lead with Madhuri again. Tezaab turned out to be the biggest grosser of 1988 pushing Anil’s status from an actor to a star. In fact the film also fetched him his first best actor award. Followed Shekhar Kapur’s Mr. India and Subhash Ghai’s Meri Jung that only asserted his status as an actor.

On one hand the press was harping about his achievements as an actor, on the other they were linking him with not his actresses but also costar Jackie Shroff. When Jackie was asked about his queer relationship with Anil Kapoor, he had pooh-poohed the charge saying that it was nothing but the press’ wild imagination. Anil was also accused of having played dirty with Jackie especially when it came to the length of the roles in films that had them together. To that Jackie just said that Anil was like a younger brother and it wasn’t unusual for someone young to have things his way. The accusation was more concerning the miniscule role Jackie had been offered in Boney Kapoor’s magnum opus Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja the costliest film ever made in the history of Indian cinema. But when it came to covering that amount the film proved to be an absolute dud causing a major setback to the Kapoor family.

Anil Kapoor The press also came down on Anil heavily when he allegedly rigged the award for the best actor for Beta in 1992. People felt it was Aamir Khan who deserved it for his performance in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander and not Anil Kapoor. The issue became a big controversy where the editor of the magazine even stepped down from his post so as to be fair to Aamir Khan. Anil wasn’t bogged down by what the press and the people had to say. He continued to give sterling performances and has been remembered for them even today, including Eeshwar that bagged him the special jury award.

But to top it all was the National Award that he won for his performance in Rajkumar Santoshi’s Pukar. And is now looking forward to yet another commendable performance Shankar’s Nayak. Though his recent debut home production Badhai Ho Badhai co- starring Shilpa Shetty and Keerti Reddy failed badly Anil Kapoor is unfazed. Despite new breed of actors taking charge on the marquee, Anil Kapoor continues to hold as he says, "At this stage of life I can’t afford to be worried about the likes of Hrithik Roshans and Abhishek Bachchans

Anil's is looking forward this year 2004 for his four new release. Boney Kapoor's No Entry is a comedy with Salman Khan, Fardeen Khan, Bipasha Basu, Lara Dutt, Celina Jaitely and Esha Deol. Then there's Boney's other film Bewafaa which is a dramatic love triangle with Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor. He also lined up with Sanjay Gupta's Musafir which is a thriller. And Ram Gopal Verma's 2'O Clock Murder an offbeat thriller.

Awards Won:
  • Filmfare Best Supporting Actor award 1984 for Mashaal
  • Filmfare Best Supporting Actor award 1988 for Tezaab
  • Filmfare Best Actor award 1992 for Beta
  • Screen Videocon Best Actor award 1997 for Virasat
  • Best Actor National Award for his performance in Pukar
